<< Indoor Air Allergens Searsmont firm makes case for safe, Maine-made toys (Bangor Daily News) >>is it only when you eat it? because I have some old furniture that I know has lead paint in it. I repainted over the lead paint BUT now both layers seem to be chipping off and I am wondering if this is dangerous for me! thanks
Deteriorating lead paint is always a hazard. It is more dangerous to children than adults, but adults can get lead poisoning, too. You can get a specialized paint stripper to get rid of the lead paint permanently rather than painting over it every couple of years. www.leadoutpaintstripper.com and www.dtep.com have the best paint strippers I’ve seen.

I think that lead can be dangerous only when you ingest and touch it…There was something about a recall on toys made in China because most of them had lead based paint. I'm pretty sure that kids got sick from putting those toys in their mouth and from touching them, maybe it is absorbed through the skin. Ask your doctor.

Yes its dangerous, I would not own anything that I knew had lead paint on it, it has been banned in America for years now.
If you really want to keep the item, hire someone to chemically strip it down to the wood, and refinish.
If its a decent wood type, refinish with 3 coats of clear varnish on it and it will never peel, and will show the natural beauty of the wood.

Lead based paint is a problem if you eat the paint chips or chew on a toy painted with lead based paints as toddlers are prone to do. It can also be a problem if you are sanding the finish off the furniture and raising dust that can be inhaled. If your furniture is just sitting there, it is not a problem.

you should not have a problem sitting on old furniture with lead paint unless you are a nudist and absorb the lead through your delicate membranes

Only if you eat it. Or if you turn it to dust and breath it. It is not dangerous otherwise. Relax.
