It is more dangerous to children than adults, but adults can get lead poisoning, too. If you really want to keep the item, hire someone to chemically strip it down to the wood, and refinish. I'm pretty sure that kids got sick from putting those toys in their mouth and from touching them, maybe it is absorbed through the skin.
